Paediatric respiratory medicine focuses on the study and treatment of respiratory diseases in babies, children, and adolescents (such as asthma, persistent cough, or recurrent infections). Its primary aim is to ensure the optimal development and function of the growing respiratory system, improving patients’ quality of life and preventing long-term complications that may affect their health in adulthood.
It often works closely alongside paediatric allergy, offering a multidisciplinary approach that allows for more effective management of respiratory conditions, particularly when they are triggered by allergic causes.
Childhood asthma
A condition in which the airways become highly sensitive, narrow, and produce excess mucus. The main symptoms include episodes of cough (especially at night or during exertion), shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing.
Chronic cough or wheezing
A cough is considered chronic when it persists for more than 4 weeks. Wheezing is a high-pitched, whistling sound heard during breathing (usually on exhalation), caused by narrowing of the airways.
Bronchiolitis
Very common in babies and children under 2 years of age. It typically begins like a cold and, after a few days, may worsen, presenting with persistent cough, rapid and laboured breathing, wheezing, and often difficulty feeding.
Infecciones respiratorias
Dr Francisco Javier Recio Valcarce Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Allergy
During his fourth year of Paediatrics training, Dr Francisco Recio chose to focus his career on Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Allergy. He completed his subspecialty training at Ramón y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid and undertook external rotations at 12 de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid and Son Espases University Hospital in Palma de Mallorca.
His aim has been to develop expertise in both fields due to the close relationship between them, as a multidisciplinary approach allows for more effective management of both respiratory and allergic conditions.
Providing combined paediatric allergy and respiratory care has a clear practical benefit, as a large proportion of childhood allergies present with respiratory symptoms such as rhinitis, cough, asthma, or episodes of breathing difficulty.
Numerous clinical guidelines and studies highlight the strong connection between allergic inflammation in the upper airways (such as the nose) and the development or worsening of lower airway conditions (such as asthma).
