What is paediatric respiratory medicine?

Paediatric respiratory medicine focuses on the study and treatment of respiratory diseases in babies, children, and adolescents (such as asthma, persistent cough, or recurrent infections). Its primary aim is to ensure the optimal development and function of the growing respiratory system, improving patients’ quality of life and preventing long-term complications that may affect their health in adulthood.

It often works closely alongside paediatric allergy, offering a multidisciplinary approach that allows for more effective management of respiratory conditions, particularly when they are triggered by allergic causes.

Respiratory conditions we manage at home

A condition in which the airways become highly sensitive, narrow, and produce excess mucus. The main symptoms include episodes of cough (especially at night or during exertion), shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing.

A cough is considered chronic when it persists for more than 4 weeks. Wheezing is a high-pitched, whistling sound heard during breathing (usually on exhalation), caused by narrowing of the airways.

Very common in babies and children under 2 years of age. It typically begins like a cold and, after a few days, may worsen, presenting with persistent cough, rapid and laboured breathing, wheezing, and often difficulty feeding.

Which respiratory conditions can be managed at home?

Our paediatric respiratory home service is designed for the assessment, diagnosis, and follow-up of the most common respiratory conditions in childhood, providing specialist care without the need for travel.

We manage childhood asthma, including individualised clinical assessment, treatment adjustment, and family education on the correct use of inhalers and monitoring devices.

We also evaluate chronic cough and recurrent wheezing, analysing potential causes and progression through clinical examination and, when indicated, basic respiratory function tests such as spirometry or peak flow measurement.

The service includes the monitoring and follow-up of bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and respiratory infections, particularly in young children or those with risk factors, as well as the management of bronchitis and other lower respiratory tract infections, closely tracking clinical progress and helping to prevent complications.

All of this is complemented by close, home-based follow-up tailored to each child, ensuring a safe and continuous approach to the most common paediatric respiratory conditions.

Dr Francisco Javier Recio Valcarce Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Allergy

During his fourth year of Paediatrics training, Dr Francisco Recio chose to focus his career on Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Allergy. He completed his subspecialty training at Ramón y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid and undertook external rotations at 12 de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid and Son Espases University Hospital in Palma de Mallorca.

His aim has been to develop expertise in both fields due to the close relationship between them, as a multidisciplinary approach allows for more effective management of both respiratory and allergic conditions.

Benefits of combining Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Allergy

Providing combined paediatric allergy and respiratory care has a clear practical benefit, as a large proportion of childhood allergies present with respiratory symptoms such as rhinitis, cough, asthma, or episodes of breathing difficulty.

Numerous clinical guidelines and studies highlight the strong connection between allergic inflammation in the upper airways (such as the nose) and the development or worsening of lower airway conditions (such as asthma).

Offering an integrated service allows us to:

  • Assess and treat both the allergic cause and its respiratory consequences
  • Provide a comprehensive and personalised approach, reducing fragmented care
  • Identify comorbidities (e.g. asthma and allergic rhinitis) and manage them in a coordinated way
  • Improve quality of life for both the child and their family, with fewer hospital visits, greater convenience, and more effective follow-up

Benefits of a home respiratory consultation

  • Avoid unnecessary travel and waiting times at clinics
  • Care in a familiar environment, reducing stress for the child
  • More accurate and timely diagnosis in the patient’s real-life setting
  • Flexible scheduling and follow-up visits
  • Coordination with other specialists from Equipo Médico Ordovás when needed
  • Closer, continuous follow-up with fewer interruptions
