Paediatric endocrinology is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of conditions related to the hormonal system in babies, children, and adolescents.
Hormones regulate essential body functions such as growth, metabolism, puberty, and glucose balance. When these processes are disrupted, conditions may arise such as short stature, early or delayed puberty, thyroid disorders, or diabetes.
Early diagnosis and appropriate follow-up allow these conditions to be identified in time and enable the development of a personalised treatment plan tailored to each child’s age, development, and family environment.
Growth disorders
In cases of short stature, the causes of growth significantly below the average for age and sex are investigated. These may include growth hormone (GH) deficiency, genetic syndromes, or idiopathic familial short stature.
The opposite scenario can also be assessed—excessive growth, which may be associated with genetic conditions, excess GH (gigantism), or other endocrine disorders.
Thyroid disorders
Such as congenital or acquired hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or thyroid nodules.
Childhood obesity / metabolic disorders
Differential diagnosis between primary (exogenous) obesity and secondary causes (endocrine or genetic).
Management of obesity-related comorbidities, such as dyslipidaemia (high cholesterol), hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (increasingly common in adolescents).
Precocious or delayed puberty
Assessment of the child’s physical and hormonal development.
