What is Allergology?

Allergology is a cross-disciplinary specialty that allows for the assessment of a wide variety of symptoms through a global view of the immune system. This includes differential diagnosis with systemic diseases and the evaluation of complex conditions such as mast cell activation syndromes.

Allergy is a curious kind of mistake by the immune system: the body reacts to harmless substances — such as pollen, dust mites, certain foods or medications — mistakenly identifying them as dangerous. This confusion can cause respiratory, rhinsinusal, skin or digestive symptoms, and it often raises uncertainty about whether a skin, respiratory or digestive problem has an allergic origin or not.

Which Allergy Symptoms Can Be Treated at Home?

During your at-home allergy specialist visit, we can address a broad range of allergic manifestations in adults, providing diagnosis and treatment tailored to your home environment. Below we explain the main conditions we can treat:

  • Allergic rhinitis and allergen-induced asthma:
If you suffer from recurrent nasal congestion, sneezing fits, itchy nose or eyes, constant watery discharge, or cough, wheezing or breathing difficulty when exposed to allergens such as dust, pollen, mites or pets — it’s likely that you have allergic rhinitis or allergen-induced asthma. During the home visit we perform a sensitisation diagnosis (skin tests or blood analysis) and design a personalised treatment plan, along with practical advice to avoid the allergen in your home.
  • Food Allergy in Adults:
Although food allergies are more commonly thought of in children, adults can also experience them. Symptoms may include hives, itching in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, swelling of lips or tongue, diarrhea, vomiting or even respiratory symptoms after eating. During the home-visit consultation, a detailed evaluation is conducted, a personalised dietary plan is proposed and, when indicated, specific immunotherapy is offered.
  • Drug Allergy:
If you have had unexplained or adverse reactions after taking medications (such as rashes, hives, angioedema or respiratory problems), a tolerance assessment is carried out, challenge studies may be arranged in a safe environment, and you receive follow-up care at home to minimise risks and plan your future treatment.
  • Sting Allergy:
Stings from hymenoptera like wasps or bees can trigger reactions ranging from local swelling to systemic symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing or low blood pressure. During your home visit, the risk is assessed, specific tests are performed if appropriate and an immunotherapy plan is designed to prevent future reactions.
  • Mast Cell Activation Syndromes / Chronic Inducible Urticaria:
Patients with persistent urticaria, recurrent wheals, flushing or mast cell activation may require specialised management. In the home-care service a detailed diagnostic assessment is performed, a therapeutic home plan is proposed and regular follow-up is undertaken to stabilise symptoms.
  • Diagnostic Tests at Home:
To make an effective allergy diagnosis, some tests can be carried out in your home: simple skin tests (prick tests), blood tests for specific IgE and an environmental assessment of your dwelling (domestic allergens, dust, humidity). This enables a more comfortable diagnosis tailored to your environment.
  • Follow-Up and Control:
Once treatment has started, monitoring is key: home control visits to adjust medication, review progress, educate you about self-care and allergen-avoidance measures. This continuous service also enables detection and response to any changes or reactivations of the allergic condition.

Allergology for Adults

My vocation for medicine has accompanied me since childhood and remains the driving force behind everything I do. I graduated in Medicine from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2008) and trained as a specialist in Allergology between 2010 and 2014 at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre. Since then, I have worked in various hospitals in the Madrid region — Hospital Infanta Leónor, Hospital de Torrejón, again the 12 de Octubre, Hospital Ramón y Cajal and Hospital Infanta Sofía. Since 2018 I have been part of the Allergology team at the Hospital Universitario Príncipe de Asturias. This journey has allowed me to become familiar with different ways of working, to learn from outstanding professionals and to develop a strong capacity for adaptation.

Allergology excites me because of its cross-disciplinary nature, the challenge of integrating different areas of medicine and because it is still a fairly little-known specialty, yet it is advancing rapidly in scientific understanding and in diagnostic and treatment possibilities. I enjoy building close relationships, listening and accompanying patients, understanding not only the disease but also the context and reality of each individual.

Moreover, being the mother of a girl with allergies has allowed me to experience the other side of the specialty: that of the patient and their family. Thanks to this, I better understand their concerns and can offer more empathetic, practical and quality-of-life-centred care.

Advantages of At-Home Allergology Care

Seeing patients in their home environment allows us to better understand the factors influencing their allergy and to offer more practical, tailored solutions suited to their everyday lives.

If you experience respiratory, sinonasal, skin or digestive symptoms that could be allergy-related, we can help you identify the source and prevent it from worsening.
