Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition
Specialty that deals with diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract and associated organs such as the liver, gallbladder and bile duct and the exocrine pancreas. In addition, Pediatrics also deals with nutrition from the first day of life until adolescence.
Some frequent reasons for consultation are food allergies (such as cow’s milk protein allergy), gastroesophageal reflux, abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation. The Gastroenterology office also diagnoses and monitors diseases such as eosinophilic esophagitis, celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. The practice also performs nutritional assessment and treatment in cases of growth retardation, children with pathologies that may compromise their nutritional status and children with feeding problems or obesity.
Pediatric Endocrinology
This is the specialty that studies and treats endocrine system diseases such as growth disorders, precocious or delayed puberty, thyroid disorders and type 1 diabetes, among others.
Dr Mariano Silva subspecialized in pediatric endocrinology at Hospital Universitario La Paz, and trained in different fields such as diabetology, obesity or growth disorders.
Dr. Laura Alonso-Gamo subspecialized in pediatric endocrinology at Hospital Universitario La Paz, Hospital 12 de Octubre and Hospital Ramón y Cajal.
Pediatric Pneumology and Allergology
This deals with the study and treatment of the respiratory system pathology in infants, children and adolescents. Given the high frequency of respiratory symptoms in children, especially in their first years of life, it is important to diagnose well those patients who suffer from a specific pulmonary pathology and who can benefit from an adequate treatment.
The most frequent diseases treated in Pneumology are recurrent respiratory infections, chronic cough, asthma, bronchiolitis and recurrent pneumonia. At the hospital level, pneumological follow-up of patients with cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, neuromuscular diseases, etc. is also performed.
Pediatric Neurology
Pediatric neurology is the medical specialty that treats disorders of the nervous system in children and adolescents, including conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
In addition, a large part of our work focuses on supporting children’s neuromaturational needs: evaluating development, learning and related disorders, sleep and daily routines, socialization, and behavior. This allows us to detect possible issues early and act on them promptly.
We also address more common neurological problems such as headaches, epilepsy, and motor disorders.
If you believe your child may be experiencing difficulties in any of these areas and need guidance, do not hesitate to contact us. We will provide individualized recommendations tailored to each child and their environment.
Pediatric Nephrology
Pediatric Nephrology deals with diseases affecting the kidney and urinary tract. Some of the pathologies frequently seen in the office are dilatation of the urinary tract, renal or urinary tract malformations, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, renal cysts, glomerular diseases, hematuria, arterial hypertension, urinary disorders and nocturnal enuresis among others.
Dr. Beatriz Huertes has completed the subspecialty of Pediatric Nephrology at the Hospital Universitario La Paz. For 10 years she has practiced the specialty in hospital care, combining her work with teaching at the European University of Madrid where, among other subjects, she teaches Child Nephrology.
Pediatric Hemato-oncology
Pediatric Hematology deals with a wide spectrum of diseases related to alterations of the blood and hematopoietic organs in children, with benign diseases being the most prevalent within this subgroup of pathologies. This field includes the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of the following blood disorders: deficiency anaemias (iron deficiency anaemias, megaloblastic anaemias due to folic acid or vitamin B12 deficiency…), benign neutropenia, eosinophilias, coagulation disorders…
Dr. Serafín Castellano is a doctor who graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, specialising in Pediatrics at the Hospital Universitario La Paz, with specialised training in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, including a training stay at the Coagulopathies Unit of reference in the Community of Madrid. He then continued his training in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the prestigious Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, UK.
At home she will be able to attend you in those pathologies that can be managed in an outpatient setting, and is also available to resolve any doubts that may arise regarding the analytical diagnosis and treatment of these diseases, including those alterations present in hemogram and coagulation studies.
Neonatology: prenatal visit, care of the premature and term newborns
Neonatology is the pediatric specialty that includes the study and treatment of newborns in their first month of life.
The neonatologist provides prenatal support to families, during delivery and after birth. It is the specialist who ensures the proper transition to extrauterine life, feeding, growth, control of jaundice, proper cord care, as well as neurological and motor development.
And what can we do at home? We can accompany you before the birth of your baby either telematically or in person so that you know what the first days of life will be like and what your baby will need. After the birth, we can carry out a specific follow-up of the newborn, since this period is vital for babies in order to determine pathologies and establish an adequate pattern of growth and health. Therefore, we recommend to evaluate them at one week, fifteen days and one month of life, always adapting to the needs of each family.
Pediatric dermatology
Dr. Bandini specialized in medical-surgical dermatology and venereology at the Hospital Príncipe de Asturias in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), where she continues to practice most of her profession, combining it with work in private clinics and online consultations.
She treats adult patients, as well as children and teenagers, having dedicated part of her time during her residency to the study of pediatric dermatology at the Hospital Infantil Niño Jesús.
Pediatric traumatology
Children are not small adults, as their musculoskeletal system is still developing and differs from that of adults. Pediatric Traumatology specializes in diagnosing and treating orthopedic issues, deformities, and fractures in children to prevent future complications. Differentiating between normal growth and a pathology can be challenging, so consulting an expert reassures families and helps address these concerns.
Dr. Teresa Rodríguez del Real developed an interest in pediatric traumatology during medical school and directed all her training toward this specialty. In 2013, she completed a rotation in pediatric orthopedics at the University Hospital of Coventry & Warwickshire (UK) under Mr. Cooke. During her residency, she expanded her knowledge at the Niño Jesús Hospital (Madrid) and the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (London) under Prof. D. Eastwood.
In 2022, as a specialist, she undertook a visiting fellowship in osteogenesis imperfecta at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital (UK) with Mr. Fernandes, Mr. Nicolau, and Mr. Giles. Since 2020, she has worked as a pediatric traumatologist at the Getafe University Hospital and the Niño Jesús University Hospital.
